November 28

Check out some new footage of me and Jacob Whitt, which we have entitled "Dos", since it is footage of the two of us doing flatland in El Paso, Texas, Philadelphia, PA and a few secret locations. Jacob did all the editing and it really is an impressive film, I think he did an incredible job on it. Plus, he rips it up skating and I think I got in a few quality tricks too. Happy Veterans Day, and I want to thank all the men and women who serve and have served in our military for their service, honor and bravery. Among those, I include my Dad, Gordon, who served in WWII and my brother, Gordon, who served in Viet Nam.

I went to a meeting held today for a future skatepark here in El Paso, which will be the future Mountain View Skatepark. There was a great turnout, probably 50-60 communitty people, mostly skaters and parents, and the park will be done by Site Design Group, and we believe in concrete. We had a nice turn out yesterday at the Chalk the Block art event in downtown El Paso, where we also had a portable skatepark set up in the streets. Thanks to the efforts of the El Paso Skatepark Association and Crooks Skateshop, we had a great day of riding, relating and ripping. Lots of fun for all skaters, both young and old.

I got some good news this week that I am now officially back on Tracker Trucks, who have been a sponsor of mine off and on cince 1988. I was extremely hopeful that it would continue and many thanks to Dayne and of course, Larry Balma of Tracker, who continue to be great supporters. Muchas gracias amigos!

I just wanted you everyone know that we (the Dr. Skateboard Team) made it back from a successful weekend at the 2010 World Freestyle Championships in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania held last weekend.

In the Amateur category, Jacob Whitt got 9th place and Chris Benker got 17th place. I ended up taking 2nd place in the Master's category. The contest had around 80 total competitors in 5 categories (novice, amateur, women's, master's and pros), and 10 countries were represented along with approximately 20 states in the US.

I just saw that I made the front page of the Baylor College of Education Web site for the work we did this summer with Project STOMP. It was great to work there and Rachelle and Trena have a great program and an outstanding gourp of students and staff.

I did a demo at UTEP this past weekend, on Saturday August 21, for a group of students and parents as part of a College Readiness Program. It was a lot of fun, a hot day as well, and at the end of it all, I got a few shots and some copy in the online version of the El Paso Times.

I just finished doing a series of Action Science Demos with Bryan S. and Chris B. in Waco, Texas. We got a bunch of local coverage, including a couple of video pieces as well. One video was on the local Channel 10 News in Waco and the other video is from the Waco Independent School District (WISD). the WISD also added a story on our work there as well.

We had a successful show for the 2010 Third Annual EPSA Skate Deck Art show held last night at the Black Market on 110 Robinson in the Cincinatti area of El Paso. It was quite a turn out, and I think we had our most successful fundraiser yet, where all the donations go to help skaters and skate facilities in El Paso. I am sure there were more than 200 people there and we had over 70 boards displayed by local artists, skaters and communitty members. You can see the boards here, so check them out, they are hanging on somebody's wall now.

I did a radio interview yesterday on Talk Radio 1150 AM with Paul (Z-Man) Zimmerman, where we talked with the host, Lisa D, about the upcoming EPSA Skate Deck Art Show and the impacts of Dr. Skatebaord's Action Science. Lisa D was a gracious and entertaining host, and I look forward to heading back to the show again.

Then, today, Paul and I went on the Steve Kaplowitz show on KROD 600 AM Sports Radio, where we talked more about skateboarding, the skate deck art show, action science, and of course, sports. Steve was super cool too, and I hope to get back on the show again soon.

I went to Carolina Skatepark to session with the El Chuco Boyz, and had a great session with Chris Benker, Jacob, Louis and Damian. Speaking of Damian, who was just killing it all over the park, his new issue of C-39 Magazine is out for you to read. (Link opens in new window).

Today is Dead Day at UTEP, but skateboarding is alive and well on campus. Here is a link to a story on RIDE, which is an official UTEP Student Organization dedicated to making skateboarding and all things skate-like viable activities on campus.

I did a demo today with Chris Benker and Jacob Whitt as part of the UTEP Master Teacher Academies at the Ysleta Independent School District Headquarters. We performed for a number of teachers and the guys really ripped it up as always. After that, I did a series of professional development activities using Action Science in the context of the 5Es of Constructivism.

The demos, done at Universal Studios, have included John Parker, Gary Laurent & Fabiola Da Silva, all of whom have done Dr. Skateboard shows in the past. This is an article that I co-authored with Paul Zimmerman. If you look close, you can see that I am doing a frontside lipslide in the ditch. I hope you come and check it out.

We just got some photos of the crew ripping it up in both Phoenix (Billy Gawrch, Flatland Scientist, BMX) and El Paso (Dr. Skateboard, Chris Benker and Chris Bobino). The shots in El Paso are from the heralded Tidy Bowl and the shots in Phoenix are at an undiscosed secret location, and the tie that binds is the Action Science "Beaker & Gear" shirts on the crew.

Did a teacher training for Action Science for 25 pre-service teachers as part of the UTEP College of Education certification program. The group was very enthusiastic and will be usign the materials in their classrooms in the coming years.

Met up with one of my long time homies in skateboarding, Kenny Hamilton, who along with his brothers, Rusty and Steve were part of the original 17th Street Richmond contingent, that included me, along with Ken and Rob Rice. It was great to see him and catch up on all things skateboarding.

I did a teacher training for Aciton Science for 90 in-service teachers as part of the Ysleta Independent School District's involvement with the GEARUP program. The group was very enthusiastic and energentic, and it marks the third school district that is using the Actino Science curriclulum in working with their middle school students.

The boys did a demo at Davenport Elementary School today with the team consisting of Chirs Benker and Jacob Whitt. They ripped it up much to the delight of all the kids and faculty too.

I started my first day as the new Associate Dean in the College of Education at UTEP, and this is a great opportunity to learn and grow within the university. I am humbled and excited by this new position and imagine my life as a skateboarder - falling down and getting back up - will serve me well in my new role.
